Santa Cruz is the harbour and main city of La Palma island (80.000 inhabitants), one of the Canaries.

The Pamir found shelter there at the outbreak of the First World war on 01/10/1914 and left on 10/03/1920 with 5 spanish and 5 scandinavian Sailors, bound to Hamburg.

At that time, the seaman Johannes Diebitsch, later the last Captain of the Pamir until the wreck, was on board.
