Oswald Ayling, born in 1924, was an australian seaman who boarded as young as sixteen.

He went on the Pamir at Wellington in 1944 (), at 20, as Able-Bodied seaman (AB), then in 1945 ( AB), in 1947 () as a Bosun and in 1949 () as an officer (Third Mate).

After the War, he sailed until he retired in 1986. He died in 1997.

In 1944, George Gunn was lucky enough to catch the Pamir by swimming after falling at sea from the masts. He catched on to the rudder and hang on until the crew was able to get a line to him.
